Artist's Statement 2024/25
The scenery viewed through the window of a moving car gradually becomes abstract. When gazing into the distance, shapes appear to exist intact, but as we look at things closer, forms disappear, leaving only colors behind. Only pure colors remain. The manifestation of spatial perception using pure color has always been a topic of contemplation for me, connecting the boundaries between the inside and outside, and between the external and internal worlds. This intersection can be found in the philosophy of Gaston Bachelard.
In Bachelard's philosophy, the window serves as a conduit for imagination that transcends physical boundaries. He believed that through windows, the inner self connects with the external world, thereby expanding human imagination and emotions. This connection helps us realize how vast and infinite the world we observe is, linking us to the grand nature outside while also connecting us to our inner tranquility.
A window is not merely a physical frame through which to view the outside world but a spatial medium through which the inner and outer realms communicate. The light and scenery entering through the window stimulate our imagination and emotions, acting as a crucial element that expands our inner world. This characteristic of windows resonates with the conceptual expansion of painting.
Traditional painting primarily uses canvas for expression, but moving beyond canvas to utilize other materials aims to broaden the boundaries of painting and provide new dimensions of artistic experience. Just as Bachelard's window connects the inner and outer worlds, the expansion of materials signifies that painting can extend into new forms and spaces. Using mixed media instead of canvas breaks down the physical boundaries of space and creates new visual experiences. Such materials enhance interactions with the external world and reflect or transmit light and color in novel ways, thereby multilayering the meaning of the artwork.
The world viewed through the window symbolizes how it can transform into various possibilities within our inner selves. Through this window, we can escape from our daily lives and enter a realm of new perspectives and thoughts. By interpreting the spaces of imagination that Bachelard spoke of through light and color, we explore how the energy within interacts with the external world.
A painting that resembles a window. A door connecting the internal and external. By borrowing the form of painting that allows us to imagine the external world from within, it emphasizes the viewer's experience through space and color, showcasing a subjective feeling of poetic communion.
